Moyo Wanga
My Life

Education | Identity | Womanhood | Community Development

Moyo Wanga, meaning My Life in Chichewa, is a creative storytelling project that gives young women in Malawi the chance to tell their own stories, through their own lens.

Using photography, girls and young women aged 14–24 from villages and townships are trained to capture the realities of their lives: their dreams, struggles, and hopes for the future. These visual stories are then shared with their communities through public exhibitions that spark dialogue, build empathy, and drive social change.

Why this matters

In many parts of Malawi, girls face significant barriers. Limited access to quality education, early pregnancies, rigid gender roles, and social pressures that often silence them. Their stories are rarely told, and their voices often go unheard.

Moyo Wanga changes that. Through photography and storytelling, young women build confidence, explore identity, and speak up about the issues that matter most to them. Rrom bullying to gender inequality, to environmental care.

“Through these sessions, we discovered that this girl was being bullied. We now have sessions with the community to talk about how to deal with bullying.”
– Lyn Munthali, Peer Suporter at iMind

Goals
  • Empower young women in Malawi to express themselves through photography and storytelling

  • Support identity-building, healing, and social engagement

  • Raise awareness of community issues through public exhibitions

  • Strengthen connections between girls and their communities

Who it's for

Girls and young women (ages 14–24) living in rural and underserved communities in Malawi. Especially those with little or no access to creative education, cameras, or platforms for self-expression.

Local communities

We work in partnership with local schools, women’s centers, and youth groups across Malawian villages and townships. All programming is embedded in trusted local networks to ensure sustainability and psychosocial support.

Why photovoice?

Photovoice is a participatory method that uses photography as a tool for expression, advocacy, and healing. It gives people the power to document their own realities and push for change.
