Pictures to Eat
A new documentary by Capa Capa
Beauty Standards & Body Image
Zithunzi Zodyera (Pictures to Eat) is a short documentary about a striking phenomenon in urban Malawi: “HD photography.” What once referred to high image quality has taken on a new meaning. Lighter skin, reshaped bodies, and fabricated luxury. Photos are no longer made to reflect reality, but to construct an ideal.

Inside the studios
Inside small photo studios, we follow photographers and their clients. Young women in particular digitally transform themselves into versions that project success, beauty, and opportunity.
These images circulate widely on social media, where appearance increasingly determines how you are seen and how you are treated.
A growing tension
The film reveals a growing tension between local values such as honesty and community, and global beauty standards amplified through social media.
What does it mean for a generation to grow up surrounded by images that move further and further away from reality?
Why this film
With Zithunzi Zodyera, we aim to spark conversation about identity, self-image, and the impact of visual culture.
